The Challange
Ornua is a dairy co-operative which markets and sells dairy products on behalf of its members; Ireland’s dairy processors and, in turn, Irish dairy farmers.

They approached Water Tecnik to help them control their outgoing effluent. They had installed a grease trap and flow meter to become compliant but as they grew this wasn’t adequate and they were close to breaching their consent limits which put them at risk of prosecution.
This project was installed in 2020. The results in this case study are based on our two year follow up.
The Solution
We were approached by the Ornua to help them become compliant and avoid prosecution. We began with a series of jar tests to demonstrate, with chemicals, how we could effectively break down and remove the suspended FOGS (fats, oils and grease) in their samples.
After we had proven this method, we suggested a turnkey project that would improve their effluent discharge, ensure compliance and also help them save money. We provided a full project breakdown which included civil design and engineer drawings, mechanical and electrical process design and all manufacturing and procurement for equipment.
The Solution
We were approached by the Ornua to help them become compliant and avoid prosecution. We began with a series of jar tests to demonstrate, with chemicals, how we could effectively break down and remove the suspended FOGS (fats, oils and grease) in their samples.
After we had proven this method, we suggested a turnkey project that would improve their effluent discharge, ensure compliance and also help them save money. We provided a full project breakdown which included civil design and engineer drawings, mechanical and electrical process design and all manufacturing and procurement for equipment.
With regards to equipment, we supplied a pumping station which takes the raw effluent from the factory and is transferred via a screen to an agitating balancing tank, complete with level control. We then manufactured and supplied a DAF system that comes with full automated chemical dosing and PLC control system. The control system is remotely controlled and alerts both Water Tecnik and Ornua if there are any issues.
The contaminants from the DAF system go to a sludge holding tank, where they are removed fornightly by road tanker. These are taken to a digester plant and processed and used as a feed stock to produce green electricity.
The Results
Since completion of the project, Ornua have seen a significant improvement in their TSS (Total Suspended Solids) from 1540 in 2019 to 332. Their pH levels are now a neutral 7.2 from 6.2 in 2019 and they have reduced their FOGs (fats, oils and grease) by 90%. Over the last 12 months, their chemical oxygen demand (COD) has improved to an average of below 3000 which is well within their consent limit.
Ornua opted for an ongoing service contract which ensures they can avail of our customer portal for ordering chemical supplies, they receive ongoing training and make use of the remote monitoring and access to the equipment. (You can view details of our service contracts here…)
